StoryJam – what else?

I stumbled across an interesting site dedicated to the art of storytelling. StoryJam is a group of professional storytellers, with backgrounds in education, child development, business, psychology and writing. They’ve developed a program that allows teachers and group leaders to introduce storytelling to young people as a classroom or group activity.

It’s great idea to give kids the tools and confidence to be able to tell the stories of their lives.

The storytelling theory

A friend of mine tipped me off to this YouTube video. Its by Professor Brian Sturm who presents storytelling as a way of organizing information, conveying emotions, and building community. I had not really ever thought about his ideas but they do make sense.

Sit back and enjoy it…

Storytelling process

In a four part series Ira Glass, radio journalist, host of NPR’s This American Life,  and storyteller supreme tells us how to tell a story. We’d given you a link to part one in a prior article but never gave links to the whole series. We like to correct that now. Here are the full listing of parts;

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Just one more story…

Telling stories to kids is a wonderful way to increase your storytelling abilities and encourage them in the oral tradition of the family narrative. In a recent article in the Calgary Herald kids sounded off with their preference for story telling;

Storytelling ranked higher than television or video games among pastimes for kids…

I can recall vividly the times I made up stories with my kids after becoming tired of repeating someone else’s books. While I remember the basis of many of the stories, alas I have forgotten the plot. Most of my stories were connected with an object in my child’s room. A kite, a toy, or a letter they had received would inspire me to weave a wild tale of adventure and most importantly coincidence and irony.

Teach your children well.

1001 Stories

1001_friday_nightsFor those of you who frequent the Toronto scene there is a storytelling venue called the 1001 Friday Nights.

I have not attended as I just stumbled across it but am interested in going. The storytelling night has gone on every Friday since it started in 1978.
